In your search you owe it to yourself, I think, to view some of the literature that - while "supporting" many of the Biblical history -- points out where the Bible is based on much earlier documentation.
The first of these are The books by Zecharia Sitchin:

Sitchin believes that we were created by extraterrestrials who needed slaves to work the gold mines in the middle east. The books are fascinating reading in any event. Even though he could have repudiated - or at least pointed out many illogical passages in the Old Testament (Torah) - Sitchin, who is Jewish, did not do so, the only complaint I have about his theses. He bases his ideas on ancient Sumerian, Mesopotamian, and Akkadian stelae and clay tablets. These books deal with physical realms - there is no discussion of the soul, or of beings (humans) who have souls.
Going one further than Sitchin is Horn, who elaborates upon what Sitchin has to say, and citing R.A. Boulay who accepted Sitchin's theses but went him one better by identifying these "creators" as a reptoid race from Sitchin's "12th Planet". Horn's book is: Humanity's Extraterrestrial Origins, by Arthur David Horn ISBN 3-931-65231-9.
Unfortunately, the Boulay book "Dragons and Serpents" is no longer available anywhere (I think). It was printed privately in Clearwater, Florida, and Mr. Boulay who was retired CIA and quite old has probably already died.
There are two Internet sites that you may also wish to visit that may give you even more of a hypothesis of how we got here;

There are other sites which talk about our extraterrestrial ancestry and identify the reptoids as regressive beings while those (such as the DOMA) as progressive. Many of theses sites seem to support Sitchin's theses) with varied themes, but basically the same "root" ideas.

"A contented people never progressed" and that is so true - whether the content deals with new ideas or old religions, I think.
